Vietnam’s New Provincial System: 34 Names You Should Know

Pursuant to the Resolution passed by the 15th National Assembly during its 9th session on 12th June 2025, Vietnam officially has 34 provincial-level administrative units, comprising 28 provinces and 6 centrally governed cities.

 

23 Newly Formed Provinces and Cities:

  1. Lao Cai Province: After the merger of Yen Bai and Lao Cai
    • Area: 13,256.92 km²
    • Population: 1,778,785
  2. Thai Nguyen Province: After the merger of Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen
    • Area: 8,375.21 km²
    • Population: 1,799,489
  3. Phu Tho Province: After the merger of Vinh Phuc, Hoa Binh, and Phu Tho
    • Area: 9,361.38 km²
    • Population: 4,022,638
  4. Bac Ninh Province: After the merger of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh
    • Area: 4,718.6 km²
    • Population: 3,619,433
  5. Hung Yen Province: After the merger of Thai Binh and Hung Yen
    • Area: 2,514.81 km²
    • Population: 3,567,943
  6. Hai Phong City: After the merger of Hai Phong City and Hai Duong
    • Area: 3,194.72 km²
